Course Title: Working with Lime
Cost £85 plus Vat per person
Course Outline This is an introductory course covering the broad principles and basic techniques of lime mortar and its uses. The aim of the course is to raise awareness and practical competence amongst individuals whose property or business would benefit from the added knowledge of these traditional skills. It is also of equal importance to those whose interest is purely of an appreciation of local customary practice within the architecture of Yorkshire and Humberside region.
Course Content:
1.Familiaristion with local limes and sand aggregates and
the importance of employing indigenous materials
2.The correct use of tools and their relevance
3.Hydraulic and hydrated limes
4.Haired and aggregate based mortars
5.Interior and exterior work
6.Stone / brick and lath
7.Practical demonstration of slaking quick lime
8.The application of mortar, rendering, plastering and pointing
9.Repairs to existing lime works
A Certificate of Competence will be awarded on completion of the course
What to bring: warm, sensible working clothes and a packed lunch. All tools and materials will be provided. Refreshments are available
Tutor Profile : Andy Lawson.
Andy has a wealth of experience in the conservation field and is an acknowledged expert on stone masonry and lime renders and mortars. Originally from Derbyshire Andy trained for a degree in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design and then completed a Post Graduate Certificate in education (PGCE) at Leeds University. He also holds a City and Guilds Certificate in Stone Masonry gained whilst working at Exeter Cathedral. In 1989 he was awarded the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) William Morris Craft Fellowship. Andy’s skills have taken him all over the country and he has been involved in a number of prestigious restoration projects working for English Heritage the National trust and British Waterways where he gained an MA in Architectural Conservation.He has also been a Townscape Heritage Initiative Project Officer for Staffordshire Morlands. In 2008 he was awarded the Hamlin-Fedden Fellowship at the University of York a post which involved working as the Regional Co-ordinator for the National Heritage Training Group
