The Custody of Mary Queen of Scots in Sheffield 1570 - 84
In this session pupils discover the remarkable story of the 14 year captivity of Mary Queen of Scots in Sheffield and her gaolers, the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife, Bess of Hardwick.
Why was Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned in Sheffield? What happened to her in the end? Was this fair?
The class will be split into two groups for this session, one representing England and Elizabeth I and the other
representing Mary Queen of Scots..
Pupils will gather information and look at evidence from the letters and portraits before bringing their case to the
Tudor Court.
Once all the evidence has been put forward pupils will be able to vote on whether they think Mary is guilty and what should happen to her.
Pupils then hear the true story of Mary’s fate before writing a newspaper report on Mary’s execution including illustrations of what happened. The session culminates with a demonstration of our unique automaton of Mary’s execution!
